Benzoyl peroxide is a common topical antiseptic, used to stop or slow down the growth of microorganisms. Such medications may come in forms of cleanser, cream, gel, or lotion.

Benzoyl Peroxide Uses
Benzoyl peroxide holds two main purposes upon application to affected areas: treating mild to severe acne and treating rosacea. It does this by reducing the amount of acne-causing bacteria, causing the skin to dry and peel.
Benzoyl Peroxide Side Effects/Precautions
While benzoyl peroxide holds many beneficial purposes, it is important to consult a doctor or pharmacist to ensure that it is the appropriate treatment, as reactions such as peeling, irritation, and reddened skin may occur, especially at the start of treatment. Serious allergic reactions such as rashes, itching/swelling (of the face, tongue, and throat), severe dizziness, and trouble breathing may occur, though are very rare.
The medication should only be applied to affected areas and avoided in the eyes, lips, nose, mouth, and areas of broken skin, as it can cause irritation. It is also important to wash hands after application as it can bleach hair and fabric. For this reason, it is also advised to avoid contact with hair, clothing, and furnishing.
Benzoyl peroxide can result in severe sun sensitivity, so it’s important to limit sun exposure time when using the treatment. Proper sunscreen application and sun protection should also be utilized, along with avoiding tanning booths and sun lamps. It is also advised to discuss this medication with a doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding because it is currently unknown if it has any effects on breast milk.
With any benzoyl peroxide treatment you are using, ideal storage is at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight.
